If you want to sell online in Spain in 2026, the first question you ask is how much it will cost. The honest answer has three parts: the cost of building the store, the cost of keeping it running each month, and the cut you pay on each sale. All three figures together are what you actually pay.
In this article I break down the three main options for a small business or self-employed person in Spain (Shopify, WooCommerce, and custom development), with prices verified directly from provider websites and no invented figures.
The three options and what each costs
Shopify: the fastest option, with a monthly fee and per-sale commission
Shopify is a SaaS platform: you pay a monthly subscription and get a store, hosting, and support. You do not own the code or the platform. If you stop paying, the store goes dark.
Plans published by Shopify in July 2026 (in US dollars, from shopify.com):
| Plan | Monthly billing | Annual billing |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | $39/mo | $29/mo |
| Grow | $105/mo | $79/mo |
| Advanced | $399/mo | $299/mo |
On top of that, transaction fees apply if you do not use Shopify Payments (which has limited availability in Spain for methods like Bizum): 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced. Every sale carries a platform cost.
For a store turning over 5,000 euros a month on the Basic plan with Stripe as payment processor, the monthly fee plus the 2% transaction fee adds up to between 140 and 180 euros a month in fixed platform and transaction costs alone, before advertising, logistics, or stock.
When it makes sense: if you want to launch in days without touching code, if you sell on social media and want everything integrated, or if you have no upfront budget and prefer to pay month to month.
When it does not make sense: if your margin per sale is tight and you cannot afford to lose a percentage of every transaction, or if you need Bizum to work natively from day one without paid third-party apps.
WooCommerce: free to start, expensive over time if you do not manage it well
WooCommerce is the ecommerce plugin for WordPress. The plugin itself is free (open source, GPLv2). What costs money is everything else:
- Hosting: a shared hosting plan compatible with WordPress and WooCommerce in Spain starts at around 9 to 30 euros per month plus VAT depending on resources and provider.
- Domain: 9 to 20 euros per year depending on the extension and registrar.
- Paid plugins: Stripe gateway (free), Bizum via native or paid plugin (some popular options cost between 50 and 100 euros per year), shipping extensions, invoicing compatible with Verifactu, and so on. The real annual budget for paid plugins on a functional Spanish store easily exceeds 200 euros.
- Maintenance: WooCommerce requires regular updates to the core, plugins, and theme. If you do it yourself, it costs time. If you delegate it, it costs a monthly fee.
Initial setup of a properly configured WooCommerce store by a professional in Spain typically costs between 1,500 and 4,000 euros depending on catalogue size, design, and integrations.
When it makes sense: if you already have a WordPress site and want to add ecommerce without migrating, or if you have a team that knows how to manage the environment without agency dependency.
When it does not make sense: if you have no time for technical maintenance and do not want to pay an ongoing monthly fee. A WordPress store without active maintenance is a real security risk.

See Professional PackageCustom development: one-time investment, no commissions, and the code is yours
Custom development starts from a different premise: you pay once, the code is 100% yours from day one, and there is no platform fee or per-sale commission. You only pay for hosting and the domain.
What a SolidaWeb custom online store includes (Custom package from 2,500 euros + VAT):
- Bizum and Stripe integrated correctly for the Spanish market from day one
- VAT at 21%, 10%, and 4% configured without third-party plugins
- Optimised Core Web Vitals: real speed, not patched with another plugin
- Your own order, stock, and customer management panel with no dependency on any external platform
- Code in a Git repository that is yours forever
When it makes sense: if your store will be the main sales channel, if you do not want per-sale commissions cutting into your margin, or if you have data or processes you do not want hosted on a third-party SaaS.
When it does not make sense: if you want to launch in 48 hours on a minimal budget, or if you have a large catalogue with complex stock management that already runs well on WooCommerce.
The table nobody builds: what you actually pay
| Item | Shopify Basic | WooCommerce | Custom (SolidaWeb) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upfront investment | 0 euros (fee from month 1) | 1,500 to 4,000 euros | from 2,500 euros |
| Monthly platform fee | ~$39/mo | ~15 to 30 euros/mo hosting | ~$20/mo Vercel Pro |
| Per-sale commission | 2% (with external processor) | 0% | 0% |
| Annual paid plugins | 0 euros (some paid) | 100 to 300 euros/year | 0 euros |
| Technical maintenance | included in fee | your time or extra fee | minimal |
| Code ownership | no | partial | yes, 100% |
Note: WooCommerce costs do not include the time you personally invest in maintenance.
Three questions before you decide
How much do you sell per month and what is your margin? If you sell 5,000 euros a month with a 20% margin, a 2% Shopify transaction fee with an external processor costs you 100 euros extra a month, which is 10% of your gross margin. With custom development or WooCommerce that commission does not exist.
Do you have time for maintenance or would you rather pay for it? With custom development, technical maintenance is almost zero. With WooCommerce it is mandatory, and with Shopify it is bundled into the monthly fee you pay regardless.
Is the code and data yours? With Shopify, no. With WooCommerce, partially. With custom development, yes, completely.
